Your first step is to determine what space will work best. If you have a pool, the area surrounding it will probably be what you choose. If you have patio or garden space, that may be the chosen area. Choose the area that will be most comfortable. Is it a shady or sunny location? Do you need to make structural changes to make it comfortable? Will the children be safe playing in the area and will the adults still be able to relax? If you are a family who entertains a lot, be sure the space is large enough for your guests.

After those major determinations are made, begin plans for the space. If you want it to be outdoor living space, make it compatible with your interior space. There should be an area to sit and relax, and possibly an area to dine. If the climate tends to get cool, include a fire pit or another type of heating element into the space. Also be sure the seating area is as comfortable as possible for an outdoor space.
