One of the disadvantages of the electronic world is that personal data is no longer safe. Everyone needs to take steps toward personal data protection. It is not uncommon to hear of breaches in security that allows your personal data to be seen by other people that have no business knowing the data.

There have even been breaches in military security in recent years. This has allowed the veteran's personal data be viewed by the wrong persons. The same thing can happen with hospitals, insurance companies and banks. We need to be careful about the data we give out.

Why is it so important that our personal data be protected? Identity theft is running rampant. Thousands of persons are having their identity stolen every month. Identity thieves can take your identity and open credit card accounts without your ever knowing what has happened. Suddenly, you start getting calls from bill collectors about an overdue account that you never opened.

You should do your best to protect your own personal data, both online and at home. The more you do to protect your identity, the less likely you are to have a problem.

Never give personal information to anyone unless it is absolutely necessary. Protect your social security number. It should only be given to banks, employers and government offices when required. If the doctor's office asks for the social security number, ask them why it is needed. Stop carrying the social security card in your wallet or purse. Instead, keep it in a secure place where it is unlikely to be lost or stolen. Wallets and purses are too easily stolen or lost with this valuable piece of information.

If you have phone numbers or driver's license numbers printed on your personal checks, order new checks without this information printed on it. It is safer to have to give this information each time that you write a check than it is to have it imprinted on your personalized checks. This will make it more difficult for someone to write check on your account.

Buy a paper shredder and use it. Even junk mail and especially offers for credit cards or insurance should be shredded. If you are not going to use these applications, make sure that they are not usable for other persons.

Consider purchasing and installing a locking mailbox. You will find that there are several models available which will allow a postman to drop your mail into the secure box so that only you can retrieve the mail with a box. Unfortunately, there are people that steal mail out of a box to try to get more of your personal data.

If you are going to be out of town for a few days, have someone collect your mail every day. You can also ask the post office to hold your mail until you return. If you are out of town on a regular basis and there is no one that you can trust to collect your mail, your best option may be to rent a post office box. The boxes are locked and your mail is secure.
